# Solar Atlas asset provenance All image files have been decoded with Pillow and checked for valid dimensions. Libraries are vendored so the deployed site does not depend on a third-party CDN at runtime. ## Planet textures — Solar System Scope Original source: https://www.solarsystemscope.com/textures/ License: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). Credit **Solar System Scope**. Their textures are NASA-data-based artistic visualizations; some unmapped areas are filled and colours are enhanced. They are not scientific measurement data. - `dist/assets/{sun,mercury,venus,earth,mars,jupiter,saturn,uranus,neptune}.jpg`: 2048 x 1024. Obtained unmodified from `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Sanghel/solar-system-3d/develop/public/textures/{name}.jpg` because the original download server served an anti-bot page. Upstream licence statement is copied in `references/SANGHEL-TEXTURE-ATTRIBUTIONS.md`. - `dist/assets/moon.jpg`: 2048 x 1024, from `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Sanghel/solar-system-3d/develop/public/textures/satellites/moon.jpg`, also Solar System Scope CC BY 4.0. - `dist/assets/saturn-ring.webp`: 1024 x 62 RGBA radial strip, from `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/stiutin/threejs-solar-system/master/public/textures/saturn/saturn_ring.webp`. Converted/resized upstream by Serge Tiutin from Solar System Scope. Map the horizontal U coordinate across ring radius; preserve alpha. Do not use a default planar ring UV without remapping. - `dist/assets/venus-atmosphere.jpg`: 4096 x 2048, cloud-top map from `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Shriisoot/Planets-texture/main/4k_venus_atmosphere.jpg`, original Solar System Scope map, unmodified. Use for Venus as seen from space; `venus.jpg` is its radar-derived surface map. - `dist/assets/earth-clouds-2k.jpg`: 2048 x 1024, grayscale cloud map from `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Shriisoot/Planets-texture/main/2k_earth_clouds.jpg`, original Solar System Scope map. Suitable as an alpha map on a white cloud shell. ## Additional Earth maps — Three.js example assets Downloaded unmodified from `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/mrdoob/three.js/dev/examples/textures/planets/`: | Local file | Upstream file | Resolution | | --- | --- | --- | | `earth-4k.jpg` | `earth_day_4096.jpg` | 4096 x 2048 | | `earth-night.jpg` | `earth_night_4096.jpg` | 4096 x 2048 | | `earth-clouds.png` | `earth_clouds_1024.png` | 1024 x 512, RGBA | | `earth-specular.jpg` | `earth_specular_2048.jpg` | 2048 x 1024 | | `earth-normal.jpg` | `earth_normal_2048.jpg` | 2048 x 1024 | Source repository: https://github.com/mrdoob/three.js. Three.js repository licence is retained at `dist/vendor/THREE-LICENSE`. Retain credits to NASA, Solar System Scope, and Three.js example contributors for the planetary imagery. Map files use their upstream names in this table to preserve provenance. ## NASA Deep Star Maps 2020 Source page: https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4851/ Downloaded original: https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/vis/a000000/a004800/a004851/starmap_2020_4k.exr Output: `dist/assets/nasa-stars.jpg`, 4096 x 2048, equirectangular celestial-coordinate full-sky map. This is the NASA star map built from 1.7 billion catalogue records, including Hipparcos-2, Tycho-2 and Gaia DR2. It is a raster visualization, not 1.7 billion individual interactive objects, and not an exhaustive map of every star in the universe. Modification: decoded EXR with FFmpeg to 8-bit linear RGB, applied standard linear-to-sRGB transfer function, then encoded JPEG quality 93. Bright HDR peaks are clipped in this browser-friendly version. Source image geometry is unchanged. Requested credit: **NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visualization Studio. Gaia DR2: ESA/Gaia/DPAC.** Visualization by Ernie Wright. Follow NASA SVS reproduction guidelines: https://www.nasa.gov/nasa-brand-center/images-and-media/ . No endorsement by NASA or ESA is implied. ## Three.js Vendored Three.js **0.170.0** from `https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/three@0.170.0/`: - `dist/vendor/three.module.js` - `dist/vendor/OrbitControls.js` - `dist/vendor/postprocessing/{EffectComposer,RenderPass,UnrealBloomPass,OutputPass,ShaderPass,Pass,MaskPass}.js` - `dist/vendor/shaders/{CopyShader,LuminosityHighPassShader,OutputShader}.js` MIT licence retained in `dist/vendor/THREE-LICENSE`. Only modification: bare `three` imports replaced with local relative module paths. ## Spacekit — orbital data reference - `references/EphemPresets.ts`: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/typpo/spacekit/master/src/EphemPresets.ts - `references/SPACEKIT-LICENSE`: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/typpo/spacekit/master/LICENSE Spacekit by Ian Webster, MIT. The presets document orbital-element data sources. The planet orbital elements are integrated in dist/worlds.js. Solar Atlas uses its own renderer rather than loading a second Spacekit rendering runtime. ## Reusable Three.js solar system reference Serge Tiutin's Three.js Solar System: https://github.com/stiutin/threejs-solar-system - `references/stiutin-main.js`: `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/stiutin/threejs-solar-system/master/src/main.js` - `references/stiutin-README.md`: matching README - `references/STIUTIN-LICENSE`: matching MIT licence Code is MIT; Solar System Scope textures remain CC BY 4.0. Solar Atlas follows the Kepler solver, axial-tilt group structure and sun-relative focus-camera pattern from this reference. The interface, shaders, software compatibility renderer and scene implementation are custom.
